Meghalaya, mapped for going alone

D1
Day 01

Guwahati → Shillong

  • Stay
  • Dinner

Picked up at Guwahati, then the drive up past Umiam lake. Evening on Police Bazaar, which is louder than you expect.

D2
Day 02

Cherrapunji

  • Stay
  • Breakfast
  • Dinner

Nohkalikai falls, Mawsmai cave and the Arwah caves with their fossils. Wettest place on earth, so a raincoat is not optional.

D3
Day 03

The double-decker root bridge

  • Stay
  • Breakfast
  • Dinner

3,500 steps down to Nongriat. I'll be at the back with whoever needs it — this is not a race and nobody gets left behind. The homestay at the bottom is one I've stayed in four times.

D4
Day 04

Back up, and to Dawki

  • Stay
  • Breakfast
  • Dinner

The climb back out, then Dawki on the Bangladesh border where the Umngot river is genuinely transparent. Boat ride in the afternoon.

D5
Day 05

Mawlynnong and back to Shillong

  • Stay
  • Breakfast
  • Dinner

The cleanest village in Asia, the single-decker root bridge, and a last evening in Shillong.

D6
Day 06

Guwahati, and home

  • Breakfast

Drive down to Guwahati for your flight.

What's in, what's not.

No asterisks. If it isn't on the left, you're paying for it.

why it's different with them

What you actually get
because Meher's there.

  • 01Women-only room matching sorted before you board — not negotiated at the hotel desk at midnight
  • 02I share the full route with your emergency contact if you want it, before we leave
  • 03A proper what-to-pack call the week before, on video, where you can hold things up and ask
  • 04I've slept in every stay on these routes. If I wouldn't put my sister there, it's not on the itinerary
Half my DMs are one question: will I be okay on my own? Come with me once and you'll stop asking.

things people actually DM meher

I've never travelled alone. Is this a bad first attempt?

It's the best one. You get the independence of going alone with fourteen people who also came alone, and a captain whose whole job is the boring logistics.

Are the batches women-only?

The batches are mixed, the rooms are not. You'll share with women, matched by age. If you'd rather a women-only batch, message me — we run a few every season.

What if I hate everyone?

Then you'll have a quiet week with good views, and that's allowed. Nobody makes you do the group games.

Periods, safety, all of it — can I ask you?

Yes, and please do. That's most of what I get asked and none of it is awkward to me.

Meher Kaul

still deciding?

Ask Meher anything.

Not a call centre — Meher runs these batches personally and answers the messages. Fitness, food, what the rooms are actually like, whether it suits a first-timer. Ask before you book, not after.

14 seats. Then it's gone.
